Reading the October issue of Sunset Magazine is like a mini-retreat - I feel transported and inspired. I'm especially fond of the pumpkin carving project above by artist, Nikki McClure.

I'm also enchanted by the idea of a modular guest house + studio as beautifully reflected in the Sunset Modern Prefab Cottage.

This past weekend, I attended an Open House at the charming Hazel to view new works by Laura Berger. I met Laura through the Beckoning of Lovely project and was thrilled to see her fun and whimsical work so beautifully displayed on the walls of one of my favorite Chicago boutiques.

I also spent some time at the Renegade Craft Fair and discovered some wonderfully talented artists. My favorites of the day were: the hysterical Fomato, the illustration and print work of Anne Benjamin, and the invitation portfolio of Baumbirdy (brides-to-be, check it out!).

I've been a little distracted lately organizing my Flickr photostream. Flickr is such a microcosm of talent and beauty - it's easy to be swept away.

This past weekend I attended a Summer's Eve Dinner to benefit Slow Food Chicago. The menu was ode to the heirloom (so much meaning in this word) tomato covering such tasty creations as mini BLTs, light-as-air tomato foccacia and a basil & garlic tagliatelle worth stuffing oneself for. There were a couple of local farmers present to discuss their growing practices. I was especially interested in a remark about understanding the intelligence of a seed.

For N's milestone birthday, I planned a "manly-man" get-away to Milwaukee. The new Harley-Davidson Museum was the guiding force behind the destination choice and it did not disappoint.

I've not always been fond of N's motorcycle dreams, but have come to realize since visiting the museum that it's a pretty cool thing. Harley has a rich and surprisingly faceted history. I particularly enjoyed the stories of women pursuing the sport and adventurously enjoying the freedom of the open road - most notably, Vivian Bales:

Within walking distance of the museum is the Iron Horse Hotel, a rustic-Americana inspired boutique-hotel catering to bikers - special hooks for helmets, a spa menu dedicated to relieving the pressure of long road trips and a motorcycle wash station. The Iron Horse comes alive at night with the fabulous menu at the Smythe restaurant and the chic outdoor environment of "The Yard".

The cocktail menu, inspired by the "vintage craftsmanship of drinks", includes in-house-infused whiskey, bourbon, scotch and a delicious Door-County cherry-infused brandy.

With his cocktails, N enjoyed a cigar he selected earlier in the day from Uhle's Tobacco Company, founded in 1939.

The Iron Horse Hotel balances the "gentleman's ambiance" with a little something special for sweet-toothed ladies - a candy bar in the concierge room!

A special breakfast in the Library topped off a very memorable Midwest mini-vacation.

PS: To accompany N's smore dessert, the chef slightly charred a rosemary sprig with a brulee torch, which produced the most lovely smokey-campfire aroma. Try it at home!

I was in New Buffalo, Michigan this past weekend coordinating a roof-top wedding at the Marina Grand Resort. I hope to share some photos of the happy couple soon.

While there, I enjoyed the container-garden installations greeting guests at the entrance of the hotel created by local designer, Marco Alexzondra of the Susan Fredman Design Group:

I popped in to meet Marco and found a connect-the-dots moment while looking through his portfolio of work - back in November of 2008, I bid on his tablescape at the DIFFA Dining by Design event!

Marco is a definite professional inspiration as is Susan Fredman's Harbor Country store, At Home with Nature.

Lately I haven't felt very introspective or really known what it is that I want to express here. I have been creating a lot and instead of words, colors - instead of plans, shapes. It's been very therapeutic and something my dear friend, Jenny, termed "Camp Jolene".

I encourage you to set up "camp" (or adult swim, if you will) for a weekend. Turn off your computer - hide your cell phone - use the contents of your art drawers - take a long walk - stretch - examine nature up close - look up at the sky - lay down in the grass - dance in your living room - write someone a note - read - make a gourmet meal - eat a vegetable...

...you know - all those things you don't do anymore - the things that get passed up in favor of "social-media-networking", planning yourself to death on your crack-berry or IPhone, merging with your TV and any other form of modern escapism that you might prefer.

And if you already are doing those things - share your secret with the rest of us!

I am ecstatic that Anthropologie chose to partner with Hatch Show Print, the celebrated Nashville letterpress print shop, for their summer catalog design. Brad Vetter (who designed these awesome wine labels) worked with the Anthropolgie team to create a complimentary front-page design for the music industry theme of the June catalog.

I'm quite fond of how the experience was described in Anthropolgie's newsletter:

"...we walked out of Hatch's doors with our heads still full of the rhythmic click-clacking of centuries-old presses. The tangy, metallic scent of ink still filled our noses, and we could still picture it smudged across the busy hands of the staff, themselves youthful practitioners of an age-old craft. Though their clients are modern—from up-and-coming bands to newlyweds and corporations—their product bears a human touch that the convenience of the electronic age often leaves behind."

After all my trips to San Francisco, I always mention Miette - home of my favorite cupcake (the "Old Fashioned"). I was able to visit their Hayes Valley location and it was as cute as a button. I heart the giant peace sign in the park right across the way.

My sweet-toothed bro and I also splurged on a $20 Baked Alaska "Bombe" from the delicious Berkeley ice-cream shop, Ici.

In sampling some of their flavors - I was truly impressed with Rose-Vanilla.

On the same street is the beautifully appointed boutique, Lola. There are so many delicate trinkets in this store - it's a lovely browsing experience.

After leaving the city and before being swept away in Big Sur, we spent some time in wine country where we had the privilege of spending an afternoon with the co-owner of Deerfield Ranch Winery, PJ Rex. Her husband, Robert, is the winemaker for their certified organic boutique winery.

PJ explained that they hand-pick through the grapes thoroughly in order to make the wine as "clean" as it can be. As a result, the wine is lower in histamines and sulfites (beneficial for those who generally experience headaches with their red wine). Among my favorites are the Shiraz Cuvee, Old Vine Zinfandel and Late Harvest Botrytis.

Deerfield also produces grapeseed oil in eight different varieties - the Black Truffle is divine!

While in Sonoma Valley, we dined at The Fig Cafe. Simple and delicious food in a cafe-setting where you are allowed to bring your own wine with complimentary wine corkage! I'd like to purchase the book of recipes by Chef-Owner Sondra Bernstein.

Needless to say, I was very sad to be on the plane traveling away from such an enchanted land.

One of the perks of having a brother who works in the boutique hotel industry is access to fabulous accommodations. I've sampled quite a few properties and my hands-down favorite is from this week's stay at the Ventana Inn & Spa in Big Sur, California.

What more could one ask from a stay then close encounters with deer, wild turkey, quail and blue jays by the dozen. Mexican sage and lavender are abundant and fill the air like lace - soft and intermittent. The morning and evening fog is matched in beauty by the spotlight-type light breaking through to the forest floor. Your vehicles for viewing pleasure are hammocks, rocking chairs in the middle of redwoods or wooden lounge chairs overlooking a vanishing bluff.

Truffle-infused pumpkin-ravioli from Chef Matt Scherer keep you at the resort while a leek tart from Big Sur Bakery tempts you away.

Ventana, and Big Sur in general, is truly befitting of the late Elliott Smith's refrain, "some beautiful place to get lost".

This past weekend I coordinated the festivities for a beautiful couple's wedding at an absolutely charming venue. I was thrilled with my client's photography selection, Amy Straka. Amy is energetic, hip and possesses an aesthetic that appeals to modern brides and grooms.

Tonight I attended an event in the beautiful courtyard of Design Within Reach's Chicago Tree Studio. Tara Heibel (owner of the urban dweller's go-to gardening boutique, Sprout Home) demonstrated techniques for planting container gardens while her audience sipped on spiked lemonade.

My camera died before I could snap some photos of the demonstration and I was disappointed I couldn't capture Tara's beautiful enthusiasm. There are some people that you can see are truly alive from their passion for what they do. Tara definitely showcased that energy as she joyfully described her choices for an edible container garden - scented geranium, purple basil, bay tree, root beer plant (!) and french tarragon.

She just might have motivated me to get my hands dirty!

Amy Krouse Rosenthal gathered a "Lovely" group together at a North-side space owned by Chicago's European Coffee House, Julius Meinl. Dined with a new and lovely friend who introduced me to radishes with salt and butter. And walked through the tranquil beauty of Rockford's Anderson Japanese Garden with Sandi.

Your relationship with where you live can feel like a fickle romance: sometimes you're in love, sometimes you're not. Lately I haven't been feeling Chicago's mojo. While exploring the city with an out-of-towner, I tried to fall in love again. I realized that while I may not be able to feel those butterflies of my earlier days in the city, it is possible to swoon from time to time.

I spent last week hosting my sixteen-year-old niece during her spring break. Since her departure, I've thought a lot about how complicated adult life is - how many choices, worries and losses fall on our plates on a weekly, monthly and yearly basis. Often our youthful optimism and blind faith are replaced by anxiety and doubt. This week I challenge you to see the world through the eyes of your younger self - springing from moment to moment with a bit of hope and energy in your step.

This week in our Unravelling class we're exploring memories. One of my favorite photos of myself from childhood is the one above of me lying in the grass staring up at the sky. Grass on a summer afternoon with the drifting clouds above was like a sedative for me - everything else drowned out and I was peacefully enamored with the world.

Fast forward to three years ago when a friend snapped this photo of me lying in the ivy near the Art Institute.

Some behaviors, thoughts and practices are embedded in us and run through the very fiber of our being. I like the idea of discovering these things - to connect the dots between then and now.

Sometimes you can surprise yourself by the person you've become. The older version of myself was often quick to anger and judgement and while I sometimes relapse, I'm realizing that compassion and understanding must win out over the alternative. People are so fragile - we just need love - and as much of it as we can get. It's really all about providing the positive words and encouragement that set someone up to aspire to change.

A treehouse in my parent's Colorado neighborhood.
Growing up, I often climbed our willow tree and hid away on the plank my Dad added. I remember that feeling of being sheltered by the wispy branches and supported by the giant wooden limbs - the joy of a private hideaway.

Linda Aldredge's grown-up tree-house retreat is simple and has an "off-the-grid feeling" - one of her blog entries sums up her motivation: "the city is my mistress, the forest is my love."

Another tiny get-away that I admire is Angele Parlange's Louisiana pigeon coop.

I've been spending a lot of time indoors lately (damn Groundhog ;), so thought it might be fun this week to profile some inspirational interiors.

The first is from Chicago-based Summer Thornton Design (profiled in CS Interiors & Apartment Therapy Chicago).

I love the vibrancy and punches of color, the use of chandeliers as a focal point as well as the whimsical mix of functionality, as highlighted with the use of a filing cabinet as a side table.

In an apartment labeled 1119 in the exquisite city of Chicago lives Jenny Gillespie, her guitar and piano.

This week Jenny released her brilliant album, titled "Light Year". Here is a sweet little Q&A between Jenny and I with some glimpses into her life (click photos to enlarge).

Q: You've created a visual sanctuary of sorts in your bedroom with items that speak to you. Is there a particular item you own that you treasure enough to rescue in a fire? Your Mac and guitar don't count!

A: My small ivory Buddha that I bought in Austin, TX at a fabulous antique store called Uncommon Objects. I would hate for its laughing eyes and adorable belly to go. But most likely I would save my overstuffed box of letters and photos dating back from 1995.

Q: In addition to your musical talents, you are a gifted writer and published poet. I love the way you describe your lyrics: "short stories of long longing". Do you have a favorite fictional character from a short story, book or film?

A: Both of my favorite characters are older people who exude joy and wisdom. Mr. Emerson from "A Room with a View" is the wise fool who helps to unite his son, the misguided, moody George, and the repressed, virginal Lucy Honeychurch. In the book he has a ton of amazing one-liners about love, living fully, both humbly and juicily, such as "I don't care what I see outside. My vision is within! Here is where the birds sing! Here is where the sky is blue!"

My favorite character from a movie would probably be Maude from Harold and Maude. She represents to me total individuality, self-love and acceptance, joyful eccentricity, and a desire to connect to others, no matter how different you are from them. I would like to live that way, now and when I'm older.

Q: On the music front, is there a particular lyric you admire?

A: I love the lyrics of Joanna Newsom. I don't even think she's a lyricist---her songs could be published in book-form and they'd still be compelling. Oddly, one that I always come back to is uncharacteristically simple of her; the end of a verse in her song "Only Skin," where she's wailing "Be a woman, be a woman!" I sing that line to myself--maybe in times of torpor, when I need some sort of battle cry.

Q: You have a wonderfully eclectic & bohemian style. Do you have a particular garment or outfit that feels transformational?

A: Any time I put on a treasured dress, I feel immediately transformed. If I'm really in the mood to splurge, I will buy a fabulous party dress. I have a really neat floor-length, vintage floral-print Hawaiian dress from Store B in Wicker Park, all poppy-reds and tangerine-oranges, that I put on whenever the weather turns balmy, and I feel instantly lightened and ready to mingle.

Q: You paint, embroider and are learning to knit. Who/what are some of your creative inspirations?

A: Painting is a weird thing for me. It usually comes very sporadically, and it comes from a deep, unruly place inside and I can be doing it for hours until the early morning, almost in a kind of trance. I incorporate collage and abstract mixed media--such a process was inspired by my lack of talent at realistic rendering. Painters like Wolf Kahn, Craigie Aitchison, Cy Twombly inspire me.

Embroidery is much more of a meditative, conscious ritual for me. There's something so soothing about the thread going in and out, and a neat little pattern slowly emerging on the fabric. Tilleke Schwarz' and Maira Kalman's work inspired me to try my own abstract designs and to incorporate words. I'm still not very good at it, and it takes so very long to do, but it's interesting that I came to it, because I consider myself a rather sloppy, spur-of-the-moment kind of artist.

Q: I'm charmed by this vase you purchased at the antique store in Austin - a town you lived in for several years. You've lived in many places across the US and are passionate about travel. Is there one place you've visited that seemed to be your soul-mate of destinations?

A: It sometimes gets a bad rap among urban-city dwellers, but I've always been drawn to Los Angeles and I could easily see myself setting up a little bungalow in Venice or Los Feliz. Something about the golden light, the cool nights, the canyons, the ocean, the Hollywood mystique (the old Hollywood mystique, at least!). I'm very intrigued by Laurel Canyon--but that might have been fueled by reading a history of the 60s and 70s music scene there, called Hotel California---a really juicy read for music nerds!

Q: Any favorite pearls of wisdom that you've acquired over the years?

A: From my grandmother, to have a sense of humor and stay busy and connected to others my whole life long. From my friend Dawn, that we can create our lives and intention in each moment. From my friend Tom Prasada-Rao, a fellow singer & songwriter, "KISS: keep it simple, stupid". From my friend Irene, I can say I'm not clumsy, and I won't be clumsy. From my friend Amy, get a hair cut and buy some new lipstick when I'm feeling the blahs. From you, to be patient with my personal and artistic growth, and to light candles in my bathroom when guests come over.

Stripes by Paul Smith
Last night I attended a presentation at Design Within Reach by representatives from Maharam to discuss the history of the fourth-generation family-run business and the future of the textile industry.

Maharam has partnered with some fabulous designers - the ranks of which include Paul Smith and Hella Jongerius (I've long lusted after her Animal Bowls and Nymphenburg Sketches).

Maharam's Textiles of the 20th Century collection "pays homage to the great multi-disciplinarians of the last century and brings their enduring work in textiles back to life."

The collection features Charles & Ray Eames and Alexander Girard, among other notable designers of the time. I found it interesting to put these designers in the historical perspective of the Great Depression to learn of the great creativity and invention of that era. Certainly there is a motivational application for today's difficult financial times. This book looks like a great resource on the topic.

One of the presenters described herself as a "textile nerd". It was very interesting to learn from her about pattern repeat, scale, salvage and some of the fibers that go into textile design and production.

I devoted some time to this in preparation for a day spent capturing images of a friend's treasured items (which I look forward to sharing next week).

Once, in my old apartment, I awoke to see a flower arrangement lining my neighbor's window-sill. I was fascinated by the peculiarly-placed arrangement.

One evening towards the midnight hour I discovered the source of the flowers. After an hour of desperate pleadings with my neighbor while she leaned out the window and he beckoned from the courtyard lawn below, a handsomely-lanky man lamented of love and pleaded for forgiveness. The woman seemed momentarily flattered, but quickly lost interest and slammed the window shut. After shouting some vulgarities in a foreign language, the man left the courtyard with head hung low. An hour or so later, I found him placing flowers on the sill followed by some final pleas of love and adoration.

This went on for several months and one night with the courage of a few too many glasses of wine and a friend by my side, I yelled down to the man whose accent-heavy words echoed through the courtyard and asked him: "Don't you understand? She's just not that into you!"

He did not seem shocked by my presence and swiftly and earnestly replied: "But I love her."

Though I giggled at the oddness of this human contact, I also felt sad for the man who was so tortured. God knows I've been there myself. It's always so clear when you are the outsider looking in and saying: "move on already!", but the mind can be so tormented with regret and longing.

While your current story may not be as charmingly cinematic as that evening felt to me or as dramatic as it felt to the mystery man, it might contain particles of a quest to re-capture what once was. "Once was" can describe many things - some as obvious as an old flame, others as abstract as feelings of youthfulness or adventure.

Let us boldly make this year about loving what IS instead of what was - with forward movement that catapults us into new experiences and fresh perspectives - resulting in the courage to embrace each moment as if it were the best.

I often talk/type at length as a way to make sense of things - to answer the whys and hows of life - to question the whys and hows of other people's behavior. Often over-analytical, this way of thinking/interacting is the reason I often hit mute during debates between CNN's panel of experts or half-time analysis of the football game my husband is watching. Sometimes I need a mute button for myself - to just breathe in the acceptance of a situation and the resulting grace of understanding and forgiveness (for self & others).

I would like to practice this in the New Year...will you join me?

On Tuesday evening I attended a National Geographic Live lecture about India by photographer, Ami Vitale. Ever since my roommate in college traveled to India and returned with breathtaking photos, textiles and stories, I have had the dream of going there myself one day. Ami spoke of how Westerners tend to romanticize India and I certainly fall into that category of someone who has enchanted views of the country from afar. Certainly any coverage of the conflicts in Kashmir offer a reality check of the tensions and poverty that plague parts of the country, but I remain fascinated by the mystical, artistic and visually rich elements of the culture.

Ami's upbeat persona and soothing voice were captivating as were her words about her profession and the country in which she lived for five years. Some pearls from her lecture:

* The human condition is essentially the same everywhere.
* Even in the darkest places, there is still something beautiful.
* There is often so much joy in the most impoverished areas (I definitely found this to be true during my travels in Africa).
* It's not about making beautiful photos. The pictures are about these people. It's about telling their stories.

Ami dispelled the perception that her raw and intimate photos result from moments of forcing her camera into situations. Instead, her work is the outcome of forging relationships and earning the trust of the people she captures on film. Staying in India for so long allowed her to richly document a story as opposed to sparsely covering a topic. Her photography advice is an extension of this work flow practice -to find a subject and strive to show something below the surface.

Ami also discussed the importance of professional integrity - respecting cultural customs and remembering that you leave behind a footprint every time you enter a story. Based on the way you behave, you can build a path for others to travel after you. I think this idea of footprint is very powerful and can be applied to so many facets of our lives.

How was your holiday weekend? I had a lovely time and quite enjoyed dressing the table while others dressed the turkey.

On Friday I was captivated by the CNN Hero Awards and deeply impressed by the philanthropic resumes of the honorees. My favorite Hero is Anne Mahlum (founder of Back On My Feet). Anne realized the symbolic significance of the forward movement of jogging and thought to extend that empowerment to homeless individuals living in her city. Wouldn't it be lovely if we could all share our passions and hobbies with others to help propel each other forward?

Have you ever purchased a gift and liked it so much that it was difficult to part with? That was the case with my Dad's birthday gift - the cookbook, Jamie at Home.

I fell for Jamie's sensibilities when he effortlessly created this dessert and have been hooked ever since. In addition to his inspiring take on gardening and seasonal cooking, the text design and illustrations are a treat. (The Plant design firm also worked on packaging design for Jaime's product line.)

And the photography - wow! David Loftus transformed a cookbook into an art book. Check out his website to browse through more of his beautiful images of food and a plethora of other subjects/objects.

I've written about Lora Fosberg before and was thrilled to encounter her new collection, A Field Guide to Forgetting, on Friday at Linda Warren Gallery. Lora's piece, Focus on Growth, is a collection of phrases gathered from self-help books. My favorites:

The combination of lines, colors and text are quite striking. I enjoy reading Lora's "thought slivers" and imagine what an amusing tapestry my own inner conversations would create on canvas. It would be an interesting experiment to capture fleeting anxieties, worries, contemplations and mini-epiphanies from just one day's mental churning.
