Was feeling under the weather this weekend, so filled my evening hours with awards shows - the Indie Spirit Awards and the Oscars. I was thrilled that Glen Hansard & Marketa Irglova won for Best Song. There is something deeply authentic about these two and the low-budget, big-heart movie, Once. Marketa's speech was beautiful:
"This is such a big deal, not only for us, but for all other independent musicians and artists that spend most of their time struggling. This - the fact that we're standing here tonight, the fact that we're able to hold this - it's just to prove, no matter how far out your dreams are, it's possible. And, you know, fair play to those who dare to dream and don't give up. And this song was written from a perspective of hope and hope, at the end of the day, connects us all, no matter how different we are."
I was also really touched by two sweet lines from Marion Cotillard's speech: "Thank you life! Thank you love!" It's really as simple as that, isn't it?
Even though I applaud the quiet simplicity of Marketa's red-carpet look, I couldn't help but swoon over the gorgeous gems at the show. Keri Russell's 46-carat (wow!) diamond necklace was divine and Penelope Cruz's ruby and diamond earrings were the perfect splash of color for her black dress.
